Vikings’ first week of school was filled with many surprises: new faces, new schedules, new construction and… a new rally? The earliest fall rally in several years, the Welcome Back Rally on Friday, Aug. 27 capped off ASB’s Week of Welcome, where students personalized and received different freebies at lunch.
The rally took students on an exhilarating trip across the country, stopping at each class theme: the freshmen ventured to Yosemite National Park, California; the sophomores to Malibu, California; the juniors to Las Vegas and the seniors to New York City. Still, all the excitement ultimately touched down at home with performances, games and plenty of class spirit.
First, varsity cheerleaders lifted each other into the air in a radiant routine, stunning the crowd with their stunts and synchronization. They were followed by electrifying features from track and field, girls water polo, girls tennis, girls golf and the Valkyries.
In between the performances was a captivating game of hula hoop pass, where the underclassmen and upperclassmen battles eventually led the seniors to triumph over the sophomores. The freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors also finished the lyrics to the pop classics “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus, “California Gurls” by Katy Perry, “Starships” by Nicki Minaj and “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z respectively.
As the rally drew to a close, two Spirited Students of the Week from each class were honored for their dedication to Lynbrook’s environment. Finally, sophomore Saakshi Athreya ended the rally with a soulful performance of Lynbrook’s alma mater.
“I loved the effort and energy at the rally,” junior and varsity cheer captain Olivia Hu said. “There was so much friendly competition, especially during the games. It was really awesome to see the freshmen at their first rally all excited.”
