Submissions

the Epic welcomes Letters to the Editors and guest columns. Letters to the Editors are responses to previously published articles; guest columns are first-person articles focusing on an individual voice, perspective or experience. The Epic also accepts story ideas about issues in the Lynbrook community. Contact [email protected] for any questions or concerns about submissions. 

 

Letters to the Editors 

Anyone is free to submit a Letter to the Editors that responds to a previously published article. Please keep in mind that all of the writing will be reviewed by the Epic’s Editorial Board and must follow the Epic’s Letters to the Editors requirements. 

Submit your Letter here. If it is chosen for publication, the Editorial Board will contact you via email. 

Letters to the Editors requirements:

  • Letters must be in response to a previously published article.
  • Letters have a 200 word limit; letters longer than 200 words will be condensed for publishing as the Editorial Board sees fit. 
  • Letters may be edited by the Editorial Board for grammar and adherence to Associated Press style. 
  • All letters must be signed; anonymous letters will not be published.
  • Letters cannot be returned and will be published at the Epic’s discretion. 
  • A staff response will only occur when a fact needs to be clarified.

Request Coverage

Anyone is free to submit requests for photo and reporting coverage of school-related events.

Submit your request here. Coverage is not guaranteed, but the Editorial Board will contact you via email if we require further information.

 

Guest Columns

Anyone is free to submit a guest column on any topic. Columns are first-person articles that focus on the author’s individual voice, perspective and experiences. Please keep in mind that all writing will be reviewed by the Epic’s Editorial Board and must follow the Epic’s guest column requirements.

Submit your guest column here. If it is chosen, the Editorial Board will contact you via email. The Editorial Board will work with you to publish your column on print and/or our website.

  • Columns have a 500 word limit; columns longer than 500 words will be condensed for publishing as the Editorial Board sees fit. 
  • Columns may be edited by the Editorial Board for grammar and adherence to Associated Press style. 
  • All columns must be signed; anonymous columns will not be published. Columns cannot be returned and will be published at the Epic’s discretion.

Story Ideas

What kinds of ideas can you share with us? Ideas are not limited to the categories below.

  • Argument – Share your stance on an issue that affects Lynbrook and its students or staff. For example, the Epic wrote an article arguing that federal education cuts threaten ethnic studies.
  • Criticism – Point out problems in the Lynbrook community that deserve more attention or need to be solved. For example, the Epic wrote an article criticizing FUHSD’s decision to cut Japanese from the curriculum.
  • Commendation – Share any aspects or changes in the Lynbrook community that have improved student or teacher experience. You can also include suggestions for further changes. For example, the Epic wrote an article commending student and staff perseverance through remote learning during the COVID pandemic.
  • Explanation – Suggest a deeper explanation of a complicated or misunderstood issue that would benefit students. For example, last year the Epic wrote an article explaining protections students have from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Our staff reviews this form regularly. We ask that you provide basic information to ensure the credibility of the submissions. Responses will be kept confidential within the Epic staff. Any act of violence, abuse, neglect or illegal activity submitted may be reported for the safety of students involved.
