Under vibrant balloons and fairy lights, students spent “A Night in Rio” at the Homecoming dance on Oct. 11. Flanked by bean bag tosses, table tennis games and class skit decorations, food stands offered snacks like fruit, candy and pretzels in the quad.
“This Hoco was super fun,” junior and attendee Vinitha Nair said. “I loved the vibes — compared to last year, the music was better and the mosh was fun because lots of classes joined. I really liked the M&Ms and cheese platters, and the Polaroid area was super cute; I loved that part, especially when they started holding lights for us.”
Throughout the night, mosh pits and conga lines sprang up on the auditorium dance floor, while friends posed against shiny blue streamers at a Polaroid booth. Befitting the Brazil-inspired theme, the setlist also went global: along with classic hits like “Mo Bamba” by Sheck Wes, students grooved to tracks like “Gabriela” by global girl group KATSEYE, “Lungi Dance” by Indian singer Yo Yo Honey Singh and “Gasolina” by Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee.
“Since we knew that we would be busy during Hoco week, we did most of our planning in August and September,” said Vihaan Patel, senior and ASB vice president and social commission lead. “My favorite part of the dance this year was the energy on the dance floor — it seemed like students were having a great time dancing and laughing with their friends. We had a new DJ this year due to conflicts with our previous DJ, but we think that he did a great job, considering it was his first time at Lynbrook.”
