Decked out in navy blue, students crowded onto the bleachers on Friday to watch the annual Homecoming football game against Wilcox High School. Even a long week of high-energy skits didn’t dim spectators’ enthusiasm, which only grew throughout the game.
The Vikings struggled throughout the first half, but they continued to fight hard. In the second half, momentum shifted, which culminated in sophomore Nathan Kim scoring a touchdown in the third quarter. The crowd met the score with passionate jumping and celebration, including chants of appreciation for the players. However, the game ended with a loss of 7-21.
“It was frustrating that we couldn’t get the ball moving during the first half, but after our coach gave us some motivation, we found the energy to fight and score our touchdown,” sophomore and quarterback Sean Huang said.
Students grouped together to take pictures and buy food during halftime, watching performances from the Valkyries and cheer team and participating in a t-shirt toss and trivia game. The pep band also performed melodies from popular media like “K-Pop Demon Hunters,” lightening up the crowd.
After the game, brightly colored cars paraded around the field, carrying the Homecoming court winners. Dressed in black and donning crowns, the winners were also given roses and sashes before standing on a platform to pose for pictures. Later, the winning class of Homecoming was announced to be the Class of 2026. Seniors cheered together and paraded the trophy all around the bleachers.
“I really want to thank everyone who came along with us for Homecoming practice,” sophomore, skit lead and court winner Hannah Zhang said. “Especially for putting up with me when I wasn’t feeling it, because it’s really hard sometimes. I am kind of sad it’s over, but I’m really excited for the rest of the year.”
The team’s next game will be on Oct. 23 against Alisal High School, at Lynbrook.
