Throughout history, music has continuously served as a reflection and response to tumultuous times.

From Ludwig van Beethoven’s 1813 triumphant “Wellington’s Victory” to the uplifting “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga in 2008, music has continuously served as a reflection and response to tumultuous times. Through World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War and the Great Recession, music has been a cultural voice for everything from resistance to relief.

Superheroes have been at the forefront of pop culture since the 1940s. Characters often symbolized American ideals like patriotism, even exploring themes of racial identity and discrimination. A closer look into the pages of many comic books reveal that the greatest superheroes represent more than heroics; they stand for radical social change, political commentary and themes of classism, racism and xenophobia.
